Satire: Parody Perfection

How to Write and Teach Satire: Parody Perfection

Writing the Satire

Parody is satire’s mimic – it apes to mock. Target a pop song: “Baby, tax me one more time – IRS remix.” Hit the style – a CEO’s spiel: “Innovation’s my middle name – also Greed.” Nail the voice – too off, it flops. Weird Al’s tunes nail it. Start easy: “Weather says sun – cue hail.” Practice mirrors quirks into laughs, spot-on and silly.

Teaching the Technique

Teach parody with a mimic game. Give “ad jingle” – twist: “Buy my junk – it breaks free!” Show SNL skits – voice, twist. Steps: style, flaw, ape. Assign “news voice” – spark: “Breaking: cat naps!” Discuss mimic: match wins. Warn off drift – close rules. Parody-off: pick a style, best ape wins. Parody’s a mask – teach them to wear it.
